About Us

Craftsman Soap Company is a stubbornly handcrafted soap company making wilderness-inspired scents drawing on memories and experiences of the outdoors. Our scents are built with essential oils for their complexity, intrigue, and connection with the natural world. The belief that making things by hand is how we stay connected to the natural world is at the core of everything we do.

It started with me - keeping bees, chickens, brewing beer, building wood furniture. Making bar soap. I always saw these things as a way to experience nature - crafting, working by hand, connecting you completely to the moment and the materials. Eventually a stovetop batch of soap got my sister out of a pinch when she needed something handmade as a gift, and she challenged me - in so many words - to start Craftsman Soap Company. 

The soap got even better, and I found new ways to tell stories with essential oils - cologne oils, beard and shaving products - always seeking to formulate with natural ingredients as much as possible. At that time my dad’s print shop had an old windmill press and I started cutting out my boxes with that. I managed to keep the press and still operate it myself when cutting boxes.

Essential oils are at the core of that connection with nature —wilderness-inspired scents drawing on my own memories and experiences of the outdoors. Built from botanical extracts and essential oils to tell the story of places - usually in California - that deserve to be experienced. The essential oils are the foundation. Everything else serves them.

Craftsman Soap Co makes soaps using the cold process method, wire cut by hand, racked to cure. Oils blended and bottled by hand in small batches in our Los Angeles workshop. Waxes and balms poured into tins one at a time. The standard is simple – keeping a hands-on approach to production and continuing to rely on natural ingredients as the foundation for everything we make.

I make these products because I still get excited when a trail leads me into a dense forest or a rainstorm, and I want you to feel it too.
